Six Osceola and Polk County residents have been accused of running an identity-theft ring that plundered more than$70,000 from it victims.

The Florida Attorney General's Office said the suspects broke into Central Florida mailboxes, stole bank and credit-card checks from inside, created fake IDs to match the checks, and then cashed those checks. Four of those suspected ring members were arrested Tuesday on charges of identity theft and racketeering. Two others are already in jail on similar charges in separate cases.

Michael h. Glass of St. Cloud, Samuel Harris of Kissimmee, Amber Suters of Davenport, William F. Wofford of Haines City, Tara Megna of Kissimmee and Christopher B. miller of Kissimmee each face multiple criminal charges including racketeering and grand theft, the Attorney General's Office said.

"Identity theft robs individuals of their financial resources as well as their good name," Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist said in a prepared statement. "When we sought tougher laws for identity thieves from the Legislature, we pledged to aggressively pursue those who perpetrate this fraud."

Several of the suspects have previously been jailed on forgery and theft charges in Polk county, jail records show. "Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the United States," Polk County Sheriff Gradey Judd said. "It's not just a local problem. I'm pleased to see that our attorney general has taken this enforcement action."
